There's a kind of silence I've come to respect.
The one that visits after laughter,
After conversations that stretch too far beyond my energy.
A silence that isnât lonelyâjust necessary.
Moments when I felt the conversation needed to die, and I had overshared and needed to recharge my energy.
People say, âyouâve gone quiet,â
And I smile because theyâre right.
But what they donât know is that Iâve run outâout of things to say, out of nods, out of numerous âmm-hmmâsâ, out of warmth.
Well, now, Iâve slipped behind the curtain for air.
My social battery doesnât die like a phone; it dims slowly, politely.
It lets me smile one more time, nod again, until Iâm in a room full of people and soon, Iâm somewhere else entirely, floating and reminiscing in thoughts.
Itâs not about them. It never was and never would be.
Itâs about me.
About needing space, not to think, but to just be.
Because sometimes, the best company we all need is our silence.
Because you are aware when a conversation stretches beyond itâs normal time length, and it may take days, weeks, months to recharge, so you justâŠdisappear.
To sit in quiet to listen to the hum of the world without trying to add to it.
Sometimes, I disappear. I donât respond. I donât show up. I cancel a lot of plans.
But my silence isnât punishmentâitâs relief.
So, if youâve ever felt full of noise, yet empty, weâre one.
And this is a reminder that you are not broken.
Youâre just recharging.
And it takes time.
So, while youâre at it, let people forget you a while.
Letâs face it, you want to be forgotten but donât know how.
So, you make an excuse that youâre busy, but youâre not.
Just so you could be.
With you, the stillness of the space youâre in and in silence.
Seeking time away from social media, friends and family.
Away from the noise and the people who cause them.
Youâre growing, because you need quiet, and you need your space.
And when you return, because you willâ
youâll speak softer, smile, truer,
because you didnât force yourself to stay âswitchedâ on.
